Lampedusa in Hamburg is a political organisation that started as a protest action by 300 refugees who had been fighting for a permanent right to stay in Hamburg since March 2013. Following NATO’s invasion of Libya (2011) and the resulting civil war, members of the group had fled to Italy, where they completed an asylum procedure, but upon arriving in Hamburg they were refused the option to undergo another asylum procedure in Germany. The stated goal was a right to stay with a work permit as a group. Over the course of the following months, various people, including members of church associations and clubs, artists , football fans as well as political party and union members, expressed solidarity with the refugees.
