Prison Abolition

As a prisoners' union, we are for solidarity among all imprisoned workers and unemployed people, ex-prisoners and supporters.  Ultimately, the GG/BO strives for freedom of trade unions behind bars, statutory minimum wage and full social insurance for prisoners in German prisons.

The Prisoners' Union/Nationwide Organization (GG/BO) was founded in May 2014 by several prisoners at the Tegel JVA in Berlin. The GG/BO relies on the freedom of association and association guaranteed in Article 9 (1.3) of the Basic Law. As a so-called unincorporated association, the GG/BO is structured analogously to DGB individual unions or the basic union FAU.

The GG/BO asks the social question behind bars: no minimum wage, no pension insurance, no continued payment of wages in the event of illness, no protection against dismissal, no “Hartz IV” for unemployed people in prison – that is the reality of the German penal system for prisoners.

The GG/BO, which exists in front of and behind the prison walls, derives core demands from this social and labor law discrimination: inclusion of imprisoned employees in the general statutory minimum wage and in the complete social insurance obligation, abolition of the obligation to work, increase of the pocket money rate and, above all, full Freedom of trade unions behind bars.

The GG/BO is centrally oriented towards the guidelines of solidarity, collegiality, emancipation, autonomy and social reform. Any form of group-related misanthropy is fundamentally contradictory to this. Trade union policy is always also education policy, which is why historical references to the international trade union movement are important to us.

Committed prisoners and imprisoned trade unionists are the pacesetters and keywords of the GG/BO. Trade union political and legal campaigns are initiated in solidarity with supporters of the GG/BO outside the prison walls. First and foremost, the GG/BO outside tries to create a public platform for the GG/BO inside.

The GG/BO is organized in all prison facilities: criminal detention and pre-trial detention, correctional measures and forensics. The GG/BO currently operates as an independent and self-determined grassroots union. The GG/BO is also striving for alliances with the basic unions FAU and IWW, with departments of DGB individual unions, actors from social movements and progressive parliamentarians in order to become more assertive.
